  • Cinerary urn stolen

Today I learned that one of our villagers has suffered the desecration of a loved one’s ashes, and the theft of the urn which held them. If you can help identify the perpetrators or help to recover the urn please use the contact information below.

You may have had a slip of paper posted through your door recently. The wording from that note is retyped below:

“Last Saturday (22nd July) in the afternoon, trespassers removed from a garden in Tunstead a blue and white patterned ceramic urn containing my father’s ashes, which they dumped on the ground. Other ceramic plant pots were also emptied out and stolen. Our neighbour spotted the trespassers, two grey haired ladies, one wearing a pink top and the other a stripy top. Unfortunately, he didn’t have time to challenge them, as he initially assumed they must be friends of ours. As they were on foot, we assume they live locally.

If you have an information regarding this appalling theft please contact 01603 395373, or email [email protected] or simply return all items to their rightful place, so we can replace my father’s ashes on the vase lovingly chosen by his wife and myself.”

  • Tunstead’s busy church

Tunstead’s parish church; St Mary’s is going to be a hive of activity in July. There will be bell ringing (4:00pm, 12th July) and towards the end of the month; a grand wedding. The day after the wedding (2-4:00pm, 30th July) there will be a public viewing of the flowers that were used to  dress the church for the ceremony.

Later in the year (1st October) will be the Harvest Festival. A celebration of the use of the land in the manufacture of food and other items we use in our day to day lives.

In order to prepare the church for these events, there will be a church working party. The inside of the church and the grounds will be receive some attention; cleaning, polishing and tidying. To do this there is a need for additional volunteers to help the regular church-goers present our parish church in the best light for the visitors. The visitors may be making their first visit to the area, and it would be nice if people from the village could give a hand. I know it would be much appreciated.

The working party will be on Saturday 1st July at 10:00am. If a lot of people turn up then there will only be a couple of hours work to bring the church up to scratch for our visitors. So please spare some time. You don’t even have to stay for the whole session; come when you can, and go when you wish.

So see you there at 10:00am Saturday 1st July.

  • Fête and Dog Show success

The Tunstead Fête and Dog Show went off successfully in bright and breezy conditions.

Events kicked off at 11:00am, after the two dozen volunteers had completed the setting up, which started the previous afternoon, and restarted at 8:30am this morning.

    There were:

    • pony rides,
    • bouncy castle,
    • plant sale,
    • craft sale,
    • face-painting,
    • number of sweets in a jar,
    • tombola,
    • bowling,
    • two sorts of raffle,
    • guess the teddy’s name,
    • “what’s in a bag”,
    • and panning for Gold.

There were vintage tractors from two local clubs, and a couple of military vehicles. There would have been more military vehicles, but our fête coincided with the commemorations of the Normandy (D-Day) landings that took place during World War II.

After all that, refreshments were definitely needed. So burgers, ice creams, teas and coffees were available, as well as strawberries (donated by Place UK) and cream, followed by cake, if you had room.

    Best of Show 2017

The dog show started right on time at 1:15pm, with Margaret doing the judging. Sarah made the rosettes.

Graham Bailey was compere for the event, and despite, as he admitted, barely knowing anything about dogs except they had a tail at one end and a nose at the other, did a great job keeping the 180 on-lookers informed, with a little help from Vicky, assistant to the judge.

Frank, another competitor, and prize winner

There were 12 fun classes, and dogs could enter as many classes for which they qualified.

Everything wrapped up a little after 3:00pm. The dogs were well behaved, and credit must go to the owners who kept their animals under close control. Also everyone contributed by keeping the rec litter free. This enabled the volunteers  to clear everything away by 4:30pm.

Thanks to everyone who turned up; with or without dogs or children. Your contributions will go towards the Tunstead Village Hall and Recreation Ground Fund.  A wholehearted thanks to the many volunteers who turned up to erect the gazebos and stalls, supervise the activities, or provide the refreshments, which everyone enjoyed.

The organisers felt that the dog show went so well, that they may focus on that part of the event next year.
