The Queens Diamond Jubilee – Part III – The Games

Track & Field Games

Sack RaceThe children’s races were also themed along royal lines, with the traditional egg & spoon tweaked to become ‘orb & spoon’; the ‘wool-sack race’ was aggressively contested, with Jake Aldridge storming home, with Matty Mayes in hot hopping pursuit. The Right Royal Pick-up was a fight to the finish between the girls’ team and the boys’ team—foul play was suspected, and a re-run was ordered, which ended in a draw.

Wellie Wanging

The Field event was dominated by the ever-popular Wellie Wanging contest, with Jeanette Ashby and Chris Symons taking the Tunstead Wellie-Wanging Champion titles in the adult section, and Lewis Paxton and Lucy Fisher claiming ‘gold’ in the children’s class. The formidable Haggis Hurling contest drew only those with courage and daring, for these rare and furtive creatures are known to have a fearsome bite! However, the juvenile haggis was successfully hurled by Antony Joergen and Charlotte Harris; the female of the species met its match in Jane Godden, and its male counterpart was subdued by Brett Ashby. Members of the Haggis Preservation Society will be relieved to hear that all 3 Haggises were released back into the wild soon after the event finished.

Parachute Games

Parachute GameParachute games are the pied piper of romps -always popular, attracting children of all ages! Fostering skills of teamwork, co-operation and listening, several variations on the theme of entrapment and escape are always fast and funny.

The Finalé – Tug-O-War Competition

Tunstead Tug-O-War CompetitionThe final activity was the traditional contest between 2 obdurate, conflicting forces: might against strategy; stamina against speed; them versus us. Over a ‘best-of-three’ battle, the men’s complacency lost them the first, the women’s complacency lost them the 2nd. The 3rd was long and hard-fought, with neither team relinquishing more than a hand-hold, but … a late intervention by John Hart , both desperate and hilarious, deemed it null and void and a diplomatic draw!
