Mervyn was the ninth child (of ten) and youngest son of Reuben and Maud Mary York, born on 12th July 1929, at New Barn Farm, Tunstead. He attended the village Primary School.

He did his National Service in Greece with the Bedford & Herts Regiment, missing signing up with the Norfolk Regiment due to a bout of mumps!

His working life was spent with the Eastern Electricity Board – even doing his bit after the 1987 hurricane in Sussex.

He married Peggy in 1953, and they started life together in Neatishead, but after their daughters were born, moved back, in 1958, to Tunstead at no. 2 Forge Estate. Moving to Granary Way when the bungalows were built in 1972.

He had lots of interests, mostly around animals and always had a pet dog, and was very good at making carts and harness for china horses – picking up a Bronze medal at a London Model Exhibition. He was also a member of NICE (Norfolk Internal Combustion Engine) Soc. And together with several village people started the NICE Rallies which Tunstead hosted for over 10 years, before it became the Tunstead Trosh. He also owned an old Morris car which he enjoyed showing and collecting number plates.

Mervyn York Tunstead Village Fete – 2014

After Peggy passed away in 2004, he kept himself busy making garden furniture and picnic tables. In 2007 he did a sponsored walk – Men returning from WW1 were given a smallholding of 50 acres –and Mervyn walked around all the fields with his 2 faithful Labradors and adjudicators.

    Mervyn makes a dry comment……

The money raised purchased new altar curtains for the church, and a chicken coup and run for the school – after that effort he was invited to join their Christmas Party each year which he greatly enjoyed.

Mervyn lived a full life, enjoyed all things Tunstead with a dry humour and the same stubborn streak which all his family had for a spine! Sadly he passed away 18th February 2018.
