It’s time to get busy with the garden maintenance. Bedding plants and half hardy annuals have finished so clear all borders, giving them a dusting of bone meal and fork in gently, using only the tips of the fork tines. Dig all available ground – dig in any farmyard manure you can get, although horse manure should have rotted for at least 5 years. Dig the ground over leaving it rough to get the frost, rain and wind – this will make finer seed bed next Spring.

Now it’s time to think of vegetables for winter use. Leeks for use from December onwards should be planted now: work a little general fertiliser into the ground, then firm down with your feet, plant in rows 1’ apart, and 6-8” apart in the row – make holes with a dibber, trim each leek’s root by about half, then just trim the tops lightly, drop in the holes and water in. As it is early June you can now safely sow runner beans outdoors, 8” apart with 10” between rows, leaving 4’ – 5’ alleyway between rows. Plant melons and cucumbers in cold frames; spray raspberries and loganberries for cane spot with a lime sulphur wash. Pick a few green gooseberries to thin them out – this will give the rest a chance to mature fully.
